NTU professor Lien Jih-ching in the summer of 2003 launched the campaign with assistance from the Taiwanese government. The program involved spraying the insecticide alphacypermethrin and using smoke and insect growth regulators to prevent larval mosquitoes that transmit malaria from maturing. By November 2003, the program had dramatically reduced the number of malar adidas sambarose ia patients in a hospital in Principe, and a 2004 nationwide antimalarial campaign implemented by Sao Tome and Principe further reduced the number of hospitalized patients, according to Lien. The Taiwan-sponsored program has been more successful at curbing malaria than previous campaigns because Taiwanese health officials joined malaria eradication efforts at the community level and remained in the country for an extended per owala nz iod of time, Dalmeida said. He added that Sao Tome and Principe has seen an increase in tourism and economic development since bringing malaria under control. Lien said he aims to reduce malaria incidence rate among Sao Tomeans under age nine from 10% to 1% by 2006 Wu, Central News Agency, 10/23 .
